Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learn in the progression it to the full product?

This project was different to my preliminary task because there are so many things that were involved in the film such as casting, producing etc. I was able to learn the different editing that was suitable for my film: Continuity and Elliptical editing. In order to make the film realistic we focused on continuity editing so that everything flowed and was smooth. With characterization we needed to think of specific people that we wanted to portray our characters compared to my preliminary task where we could pick anyone that we thought suited to the role. Compared to our preliminary task we subverted expectations of what people expect in a Romantic Comedy, usually they are based around a couple who fall in love however our film had a British twist making it unique.

Also because we had different software somethings were really hard to use one being Imovie because there was only certain things that we could do which i struggled with. For me i felt as though this was a harder challenge compared to the preliminary task only because there were different aspects that i needed to focus on which did make things difficult for me and i then found it hard to concentrate on one thing and so i was behind but i then decided to put more time into what i needed to do within the group i.e. getting the characters the we needed via telephone or thorough school in order to get down what was necessary.

From the preliminary task we only needed to do a investigation in one room where as in this task we had to find different areas that suited with our storyline which involved having to go to my house to take some footage and outline the night before. we also needed to go to different areas to clarify that this film was based around London e.g. taking shots of hackney town hall and different buses just so that we could make it known to people that we were doing a film based in London from an similar American theme e.g. in the film 'Just Wright'.

From this experience i was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses which i will then take onto the next task remembering to do things once they had been set otherwise you fall behind.

Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of construction this product?

Apple Mac
We used the Apple Mac in order to do everything to regarding our project. This was used to add all our footage and do all of our work regarding our blogs uploading work etc as well as to research, edit and save all our data. I personally had never used a Mac to produce a video so at times i did find it difficult because i didn't know how to do certain things e.g. how to add an extra tab which i now know how to do.

Camera

We used a Canon E05 in order to shoot all our work. We also used it to take a few pictures of us on the set of scenes. For me i personally didn't really use the cameras because i  thought i was going to break it but, i later got into grips with it and i then began to help with retrieving footage.

Microphone

We used a microphone to record sound that we needed in our film and also voice overs which was placed on the top of the camera therefore allowing us to get high quality of sound. We mainly used the microphone as we were introducing each character in the opening of our film which we then had to do a few times so that we didn't leave anything out.

Lighting

We used lighting as a way to set the scene and make the scene more realistic and, where were then able to use filter papers in order to make the light more realistic or to set the atmosphere. I was in charge of lighting and i really enjoyed it because i was able to decide what kind of light would fit the scene however i did burn myself a few times which thought me to be careful.

Tripod
We used a tripod in order to keep the camera steady for example with a panning shot. We did not always use the tripod but it was always around when we needed it to get really good shots which were then used in getting footage of hackney and also in the house scene.

Imovie

Through Imovie we were able to edit our film more effectively as well as put things into order of how we wanted the film to go. One problem was that Imovie was very limited and so we were only able to add simple transitions which therefore made the editing more Elliptical than Continuos.

Celtx

From Celtx we were able to write out scripts which we wanted the actors to say as well as the production schedule alloying us to different places at different times. I particularly loved working with Celtx because i was then able to make things into scripts without out things looking weird. I was then able to download it at home and start making my own scripts.

Blog

Blog was a way to write down my progress as well as assess myself in what was happening during the making of the film. I was also able to upload my video as well as questions thats related to the film.

Youtube

Through youtube we were able to find some inspiration of what we wanted our film to be about as well as figure out what it was that people liked and how we could adapt it into our film. We were also able to identify the music that would go with the some which was "Another Day" by Jamie Lidell

Question 5

Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Question 3

What kind of media product institution might distribute your media product and why?

Channel 4 would be a good institution to outline my film because many teenagers like to go on that channel to watch a variety of things. This could also help with advertising because channel 4 are also linked with Film 4so they could also help to attract our target audience. Our film is different is very different from a typical Romantic Comedy because rather than the 'ladies man' bullying the 'nerd' in school, both characters are actually related and live together. Channel 4 and Film 4 are mainly focuses on British films; our film focuses on a British angle but influenced by American Films that focus on stuff in school.

Question 2

How does your media product present particular social groups?

John Tucker vs Rick Flame

In our film Rick Flame is characterized as the 'ladies man' and dominant character in our film. He is seen as a character that likes to wear a leather jacket and a vest showing his body as a way to attract women. In the film 'John Tucker must die' John Tucker is foreshadowed as the main 'ladies man' that can get any women via the same tricks which ends up being his downfall. John Tucker also wears clothes that show his body as a way to attract women. The character Rick Flame is someone that we wanted to be highlighted in our film; in our film Rick Flame is characterized as the guy in the popular group in comparison to his brother Ned Flame.

Frame Analysis

Our film challenges the conventions of real media products through our film opening. My group wanted to show the morning scene in our film leading to the idea of an aftermath of a party. Through doing a morning scene we wanted to set the scene of the film so that people are aware that it is a ‘teen romantic comedy’ therefore attracting our target audience. However there were some problems with trying to find a range of things to fit our film e.g. someone drinking coffee or making coffee because some people didn’t like the idea of being filmed or it wouldn’t come out right on the camera which could also link with the development of the conventions of real media products.

The title of the film:
The title 'Another Day' is introduced at the end of our opening sequence to foreshadow the film therefore drawing our target audience in

Setting/Location:
For our establishing shot we took various shots to create the idea of the 'morning after' hence the title 'Another Day'. By starting with a busy train and ticket machine emphasises the idea of a new beginning into a new day. We wanted to create a 'morning after' feel because the film starts with the aftermath of a party that has occurred the day before.

Costume and Props:
In the first initial footage the characters have various props surrounding them again adding emphasis to the idea of the party that happened the previous day, e.g. cups on the floor, empty wine bottles and cans all over the floor etc. For the character Rick Flame we wanted him to look really cliche of a popular character e.g. leather jacket, jeans and boots etc. so we therefore dressed our actor with a vest and some jeans. Our party was for Rick Flame who was known as the character that organised a lot of parties as a way to 'hook up' with women.

Camerawork/Editing:
We took a variety of different shots and edited to reflect our genre and selected music. This consisted of slow pan shots and different transitions making it continuity editing so that everything flowed. The different range of shots reflects our genre because generally in 'Teen Rom Coms' the night before a party is usually portrayed for example in something like skins. In Romantic comedies you generally expect shots like a close up shots so that you can see the others characters reaction when one character says that they love them, another typical shot used in Romantic Comedies are Medium shots where the characters are seen together most likely holding hands or cuddling together. Through these shots we were able to identify the type of editing we needed which was continuity editing.

Title font and style:
The title font we decided to choose is 'American typewriter.' This is done purposely to show that it is an American style theme outlined in a British way. This also was able to outline our genre which is 'Teen Rom Com' which appealed to our target audience revealed in our survey.

Story and how the opening sets it up:
The opening starts with a range of different shots of the morning that links to the storyline which is about the aftermath of a party the night before.

Genre & how the opening suggests it:
Our genre is 'Teen Rom Com; the opening helps suggest this through seeing the characters and what kind of person they are perceiving in the film.

How characters are introduced:
Most of the characters are introduced in different ways, the first character we're introduced to is the girl who we see walking down the stairs. As she is walking down we're also introduced to one of our main characters 'Rick Flames' who she kisses as she makes her way down. The second main character 'Ned Flames' is introduced using a panning shot of him watching t.v and taking notes on the documentary; doing this we wanted the audience to get an understanding on  his character and the type of person he is.

Special effects:
We used special affects to transition different moments. However we found that it didn't work very well so we decided to leave it. We wanted to create a mood where the audience influenced by what was being shown and also to direct our target audience with any of the views that would be expressed in our film

Problems....... and Achievements

Unfortunately we were unable to film the house scene so we therefore re-arranged it from Saturday to Wednesday from 4:00. Another problem was that one of our main actors was excluded so we therefore need to contact him in order to find out when he is available.
However we did manage to do our filming on Friday which included filming our surrounding to add towards the beginning of the opening scene.

Font

We then needed to decide on what font we could use for our credits so we then we onto www.dafont.com
In order to find out different fonts that related to women i went on to www.artofthetitle.com
In the film 'Juno' i noticed that the fonts were really comical, bold and, easy to read which help to attract our teenage audience.

This clearly shows different ways that it could attract teenagers to watch the film. One being that it easy to read another thing is that it is really colourful and makes it easier for things to stand out.

In the film 'Ginger Snaps' I noticed that the font was really child like considering that it is in fact a horror film making the film more realistic.

In the film 'Blue Valentine' I noticed that they used photos of the couples in the film in the background so that it was easier to understand that the film was a romantic film. They then used a firework frames to transition each photo and to change the different credits and also the different photos.

In the film 'Napoleon Dynamite' already I could notice that this film was based around school and teenagers. It was a really good idea how they used different films, books and, stationary to show different actors names and a way to represent how some of the characters are without seeing them. Our group therefore decided that we wanted to do something similar but using books to portray the different characters in our film.

'Romeo and Juliet' is a really good example to demonstrate a good romantic film, which could relate back to our film which involves showing the story through different characters. With the title sequences we decided that we were going to do the same as Romeo and Juliet which involves freezing each character and then saying their name and who they are playing.

Production Schedule

Filming

Today we started our opening to our film at 8:30 ending at 8:50 where we needed to film the classroom scene with Ned Flame being bullied. We did have a few problems which we then tackled.

One problem was that we needed to wait until 8:35 in order to receive our tripod due to the teacher not arriving until 8:30, this therefore meant that we had to start a little later than usual. Another problem was that the actor playing Ned Flame came 10 minutes late so we then had to wait for him to come which meant that we didn't have a lot of time left to film.

On Saturday we will be filming the house scene with both brothers and see how that goes

Friday 20 January 2012

Influences

From the survey we were then able to pick out what genre we could base our opening on, which was Romantic Comedy rather than doing something typical usually Action.
We then went on to youtube to check out different openings that would help towards finding an idea on how to start the film as well as how the credits were presented.
Here are some of the openings that we looked at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sczh_KjjFNU - Step brothers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NPNoKHlTLM - Juno
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_fNozfJtCY- Mean Girls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oqps_-QfnOQ- Hitch

Survey

We found it really difficult to decide on what genre we wanted to base the opening on so we decided to ask some people what genres they preferred as well as other questions which could then help towards our opening.

Which genre do you prefer Action, Thriller, Romance, Romantic Comedy, Drama, Horror, Sci-fi, Western, Crime & Gangster, Comedy, Fantasy and Animation?
Here are the results:

From the results i then asked people why they liked these genres and these are their responses:
Drama: "It helps me express how i feel"and "Its Interesting"
Romantic Comedy: "Its funny", "Gives advice", "Helps me to escape and its simple", "Has a good story that makes people laugh"and "Relevant"
Action: "Exciting", "Feel as though you are in the movie" and "The Thrill"
Thriller: "Suspense"
Horror: "Like to scare people" and "Adrenaline"
Comedy: "Funny"
Fantasy: "Enter into a new world"

We asked them: "how often do watch television in a week?"
Here are the results:

We then asked for their gender?

We then asked them for their age?

I then went on to ask what was the latest film they watched and here are the results:
  • Grave of the Fireflies
  • Rush Hour 3
  • 50/50
  • Mission Impossible
  • Limitless
  • Killers
  • In Time
  • Goon
  • Legally Blonde
  • 500 Days of Summer
  • Tangled
  • Happy Potter 4
  • Immortals
  • Original Nutty Professor

My Preliminary Task

Evaluation: Preliminary task

In my preliminary task I was able to learn how difficult it was to capture different moments in order to create suspension. From trying to create a shot without showing a persons reflection I was able to learn that there are different ways to capture a perfect shot.
I would rate my teamwork as 9/10 because we all worked together to get the job done, stuck to our individual roles given to us and remained under scheduled time. For my personal contribution I would give myself a 9/10 because i contributed to the editing as well as making sure that everyone was getting their job done and helped towards finding an actor to play the suspect in the investigating room as well as making them feel comfortable. Next i learnt that rather than sticking to 1 role i will also do things that i am not used to which includes working with the camera. I will continue to give more ideas within my group and also continue to help with planning in order to finish shooting at the scheduled time.
Within the 180 degree rule we managed to film the characters talking whilst remaining on the right side of the 180 degree rule which was used with dialogue. At first we were worried that we broke the 180 rule but we done it again and managed to remain on the right side.
Shot reverse shot was used between both actors talking to one another to see different responses to one another which helps to create tension. At first we found it difficult to understand what we needed to do but then we were then shown examples which helped towards our preliminary task.
Match on action/ continuity was used when the officer was walking in with the folder opening the door to us seeing the officer walking into the interview room. Through editing i was able to make a clean cut making the film flow.
Some problems occurred with sound and lighting. 1 problem being that there were a lot of background music which were hard to disguise even through minimizing sound. Another problem was when we tried to film the clock but the cameraman was reflected making the shot unrealistic.

Preliminary Task

Preparation: For my preliminary task i want each shot to portray a different emotion. I will be editing and filming continuously in order to get the right shot for the specific moment in time. In my preliminary task i will be demonstrating match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.
